From the ancient ages, India has a rich tradition in math and this has led to the establishments of various centers of learning in math and related sciences. In the present day too, there are various institutes offering mathematics education and research of world repute in India. Mathematics is taught as a compulsory subject till Class 10. At the Class 10+2 level, students may opt for the subject, if they so desire. However, those who want to take Science and technology, BMS/BBE/BFIA, Architecture, Actuarial Science/BCA/MCA, Eco/B.com(H) courses after 10+2 must opt for it 10+2 level. Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation are important components of many admission and recruitment tests.

At the undergraduate level, mathematics is offered as one of the combinations both for B.A. and B.Sc. courses. In some universities, Mathematics Honours can be taken up as a course for study as well.  

The postgraduate course in Mathematics, that is, Masters in Science in Mathematics, enables the candidates to use their mathematical knowledge in different areas. Such students can specialize in a particular area according to their interest like Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Science. This course has got great scope and there are ample opportunities available for MSc graduates. Data/Business Analytics 

Data Analytics is a process of inspecting, cleaning, transforming, and modeling data with the goal of discovering useful information, suggesting conclusions, and supporting decision-making. Data analysis has multiple facets and approaches, encompassing diverse techniques under a variety of names, in different business, science, and social science domains.

Operations Research Analysts

Operations research has been defined as an interdisciplinary branch of applied mathematics and formal science that uses advanced analytical methods such as mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, and mathematical optimization to arrive at optimal or near-optimal solutions to complex decision-making problems. Operations research analysts formulate and apply mathematical modeling methods to develop and interpret information that assists management with policy formulation and other managerial functions. They help managers to make better decisions and solve problems. Mathematician

A mathematician is a person whose primary area of study or research is mathematics. Mathematicians are concerned with particular problems related to logic, space, transformations, numbers and more general ideas which encompass these concepts. They do research, come up with problems and solutions, etc.

Chartered Accountant

With the rapid growth in economy, careers in finance and accounts have gained tremendous popularity and the most esteemed career option in this filed is that of Chartered Accountant. A Chartered accountant is somebody who specializes in accounting, auditing and taxation.

 

Software Engineers

A highly fulfilling career, software engineers design and develop software. They apply the theories and principles of computer science and mathematical analysis to create, test, analyze and evaluate the software applications and systems thatmake computers work. Software engineers are also experts in theory of computing systems, the structure of software, and the nature and limitations of hardware to ensure that the underlying systems will work properly. Banking

You could work in any one of the following areas in Banking – accountant, customer service, front desk, cash handling, account opening, current account, savings account, mortgage loan underwriter, loan processing officer, back end operations, product marketing and sales executive, recovery officer, retail asset manager, property appraiser and customer service executive. If you have an affinity for numbers, you can pursue a career in teaching. A mathematics teacher is always on demand as this is considered one of the main subjects throughout schooling. It is a highly paid job in India as many mathematics teachers provide coaching or tuition to students. Mathematicians who work in academia usually have a mix of teaching and research responsibilities.

Computer Systems Analysts

Professionals in this field use IT tools to help enterprises of all sizes achieve their goals. Most systems analysts work with specific types of computer systems – for example, business, accounting, and financial systems or scientific and engineering system to prepare cost-benefit and return-on-investment analysis to help management decide whether implementing the proposed technology would be financially feasible.

Surveys

Survey Mathematics/Statisticians collect information from a carefully specified sample and extend the results to an entire population. Surveys may be conducted on a range of issues like most popular political candidate during elections, or issues related to the general public etc.

Government Operations

Mathematician working with the government departments conduct experiments on consumer prices, fluctuations in the economy, employment patterns, population trends etc and aid in the development of public policy and legislations.

Business

Mathematics/Statisticians predict the demand for products and services. They may also manage assets and liabilities, determining the risks and returns of certain investments.

Scientific Research

Mathematics/Statisticians work in tandem with other scientists to gauge the feasibility of various experiments. Those working as Wildlife statisticians help to collect data on the various animal populations and try to design strategies to protect endangered species. While others may work with environmental engineers and scientists to work out problems and device solutions to deal with the earth's environmental problems. Colleges and Universities need statisticians for teaching, statistical research, and consulting. Academic and research statisticians are concerned with the training of students and statistical research in a chosen specialized field.

Industry

Mathematics/Statisticians are involved in checking the quality of items manufactured in a facility, in product development and improvement and marketing. In addition to product development and testing, they are also involved in deciding the products to manufacture, how much to charge for them, and to whom the products should be marketed.

Sports Statisticians

Sports Mathematics/Statisticians collect and analyze sports data like cricket scores, hockey scores, tennis scores etc along with other historical information that commentators refer to when reporting games. Such statisticians work for sports teams, associations, private sports statistic bureaus, sports channels, media etc. Statistical skills along with a skill set involving sports studies, communications and journalism or public relations equip an aspirant to succeed in this field. 

Medical Statistician

Mathematics/Statisticians is central to most medical research. Medical statisticians help doctors and other medical professionals with their work. The job involves monitoring and surveillance of diseases and health pattern of the sample under study. It involves establishing the cause of disease or the factors associated with disease and death and thereby its prevention. It also involves evaluation of treatment methods and effectiveness of medicines.

 Indian Statistical Service (ISS)

This is for those who are interested in having a career with the government. Every year the UPSC conducts an All India Level Competitive Examination to fill vacancies in the Indian Statistical Service (ISS). For ISS, Master’s degree with Statistics or Mathematical Statistics or Applied Statistics from a recognized university is essential

The other reputed organizations employing statisticians include Planning Commission, the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), Institute of Applied Manpower Research (IAMR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), statistical and economic bureaus, institutions associated with socio-economic research, banks and public-sector undertakings.

 

 

Apart from that after MSc in Mathematics graduates can find lot of opportunities in Research and Development firms, Economic Research firms, Market Research firms and Manufacturing firms. They can look for the job profiles like Quantitative Risk Analyst, Statistician, Treasury Management Specialist and Demographer in these firms.

Often there is one department or school for both mathematics and computer science. The nomenclature of the award is both M.A. and M.Sc.
