JEE (Main) – The Joint Entrance Examination

The Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India has entrusted the responsibility of conducting the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) to the NTA from 2019 onwards.

The Joint Entrance Examination, JEE (Main) comprises two papers. 

Paper 1 is conducted for admission to Undergraduate Engineering Programs (B.E/B.Tech.) at NITs, IIITs, other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), Institutions/Universities funded/recognized by participating State Governments. 

JEE (Main) is also an eligibility test for JEE (Advanced), which is conducted for admission to IITs.

 Paper 2 is conducted for admission to B. Arch and B. Planning courses in the Country.
The JEE (Main) – 2022 will be conducted in 02 (two) sessions for admissions in the academic session 2022-23. The candidates will thus benefit in the following ways:

  • This will give two opportunities to the candidates to improve their scores in the examination if they are not able to give their best in one attempt.
  • A candidate need not appear in both Sessions. However, if a candidate appears in more than one Session then his/her best of the JEE (Main) – 2022 NTA Scores will be considered for preparation of Merit List/ Ranking.

There is negative marking in both Sections i.e. Section A (MCQ-type questions) and Section B (Numerical value).

The syllabus of JEE (Main) – 2022 is the same as that of the last year. However, keeping in view the decision taken by different Boards all over India, NTA has decided that there will be a total of 90 Questions in the Question Paper and the candidates will be required to attempt 75 questions only. The syllabus is available in Appendix-VI in the Information Bulletin available on the website https://jeemain.nta.nic.in/.

Those candidates who wish to appear for Paper 2A, as well as Paper 2B, will have the duration of the examination 3.30 hrs. i.e. from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Eligibility

Only those candidates who have passed the Class 12/equivalent examination in 2020, 2021, or those who are appearing in Class 12/equivalent examination in 2022, are eligible to appear in JEE (Main) – 2022.

Sections 

The Question Paper has been divided into two sections. There will be 90 Questions in the Paper 1 and candidates will be required to attempt 75 questions only. There will be negative marking for both Sections i.e. Section A (MCQ) and Section B (Numerical Value). 

Paper-wise details:

  1. B.E./B.Tech. (Paper 1-: Each Subject will have two sections. Section A will be of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) and Section B will contain Questions whose answers are to be filled in as a numerical value. In Section B, candidates have to attempt any five questions out of 10.
  2.   B. Arch. (Paper 2A)-: *Part -1 will have two sections. Section A will be of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) and Section B will contain Questions whose answers are to be filled in as a numerical value. In Section B, candidates have to attempt any five questions out of 10. 

  3. Planning (Paper 2B)-:  Part -1 will have two sections. Section A will be of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) and Section B will contain Questions whose answers are to be filled in as a numerical value. In Section B, candidates have to attempt any five questions out of 10. 
  4. Student can select any five questions to answer. Students also allowed to change the answers to the selected questions before final submission. At any point in time, student will be permitted to answer only five questions in Section B.

 

Languages for JEE Main

JEE (Main) – 2022 will be conducted in Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu in addition to Hindi and English.

 

State Code of eligibility 

State code of eligibility means the code of the State from where the candidate has passed Class 12 (or equivalent) qualifying examination by virtue of which the candidate becomes eligible to appear in JEE (Main) – 2022.

 If a candidate has passed Class 12 (or equivalent) qualifying examination from one State but appeared for improvement from another State, the candidate’s State code of eligibility will be from where the candidate first passed the Class 12. 

Candidate passed/appearing class 12th from NIOS should select the State of Eligibility according to theState in which the study Centre is located. 

For Indian nationals passing the Class 12 (or equivalent) examination from Nepal/Bhutan, the State code of eligibility will be determined based on a permanent address in India as given in the passport of the candidate. 

The State code of eligibility of OCI/PIO passing Class 12 (or equivalent) examination in India is at par with Indian nationals. However, OCI/PIO passing the Class 12 (or equivalent) examination from an institution abroad are eligible for Other State quota seats or All India quota seats (but NOT for Home State quota seats) in all NITs, IIEST and Other-CFTIs

Scribe facility for Divyangjan

Divyangjan candidates may be permitted to use a Scribe or allowed for a Compensatory time or both as given below :

  1. The facility of Scribe, in case he/she has a physical limitation and a scribe is essential to write the examination on his/her behalf, being so certified in the prescribed format (Annexure IV to VIII ) by a CMO/Civil Surgeon/ Medical Superintendent of a Govt. HealthCare Institution.
  2.  Compensatory time of one hour for examination of three hours duration, whether such candidate uses the facility of Scribe or not.
  3.  Scribe will be provided by NTA. Candidates will not be allowed to bring their own scribes.

DASA scheme

The Ministry of Education, Govt. of India vide its O.M. F.No.35-9/2016-TS. III MHRD dated 21st December 2018 has approved that the selection for Admission of students under Direct Admission of Students ABROAD (DASA) will be through JEE(Main). This may be applicable from the academic year 2022-23 onwards. 

The NTA has been conducting JEE (Main) on Computer Based Test (CBT) in India and Abroad for Admission in undergraduate courses in IITs, NITs, IIITs, CFTIs. The Admission for DASA will be done on the basis of the Rank obtained in JEE (Main) from the Academic Session 2022-23.

 

MEA welfare Quota admission

Admission against the Engineering seats provided to MEA for Wards of Government of India personnel posted in Indian Missions/Posts Abroad will be based on the JEE (Main) – 2022.

Allocation of seats 

Admission to B.E. / B.Tech / B.Arch / B.Planning. Courses in NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs participating through Central Seat Allocation Board will be based on All India Rank subject to the conditions as decided by the CSAB. Eligibility Criteria for Indian Nationals Appearing in JEE (Advanced) – 2022 

(Please refer to JEE (Advanced) website https://jeeadv.ac.in/ for the latest information) 

All the candidates must fulfill each one of the following to appear for JEE (Advanced) – 2022. 

Performance in JEE (Main) – 2022: Candidates should be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) in B.E./B.Tech. Paper of JEE (Main) – 2022. 

Number of Attempts: A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times in two consecutive years. 

It will be considered as an appearance even if the result of a particular candidate got withheld. if the examination Board of Class 12 (or equivalent) declared the results for the academic year 2019-20 after 15 October 2020, then the candidates of that board who appeared for their Class XII exam in 2020 are also eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced) 2022, provided they meet all the other eligibility criteria.

 In case the examination Board of Class 12 (or equivalent) declared the results for the academic year 2019-20 before 15 October 2020 but the result of a particular candidate was withheld, then the candidate will not be eligible to appear in JEE (Advanced) 2022.
