New-Age Legal Education: NLUs Introduce Specialized PG Courses

NLUs across India have been increasingly expanding their curriculum to meet the new requirements of both the legal and political landscapes. An overview of the new postgraduate degrees developed by different NLUs is given below:
1. MPP (Master of Public Policy)
The MPP program aims to develop policy professionals capable of tackling complex governance challenges by developing their analytic skills, formulating policy, and implementing them. For instance, the two-year full-time MPP program has been started with an interdisciplinary curriculum focusing on public policy by NLSIU Bangalore.
2. Master's in Cyber Law and Information Security
This course emphasizes covering the legal and technical aspects of cyberspace and provides graduates with the knowledge and skills to tackle issues of cybercrimes, data protection, and information security. NLU Delhi incorporates courses focused on forensic studies and cyber law blending ICT with law.
3. MSc in Cyber Security and Cyber Law
This renders knowledge in both fields of cyber security and law. Other allied courses include the Post Graduate Diploma in Cyber Law & Cyber Forensics offered by NLSIU Bangalore.
4. Two-Year LLM in Data Science and Data Protection Law
This specialized LLM program looks at the interface between data science and the law, covering data privacy, protection regulations, and ethical considerations concerning data handling. The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences in Kolkata has launched a two-year LLM in Data Science and Data Protection Law in collaboration with IISER Kolkata and IIIT Kalyani.
5. M.Sc. in Forensic Science
In developing the dialogue between law and forensic science, students are provided with the demystifying skills to analyze and interpret the forensic evidence concerning the law. NLUs are recognizing the significance of forensic science in litigation and increasingly developing programs to create opportunities.
6. Master of Laws (LL.M.) Programs
The National Law Universities offer various specializations for the LL.M. depending on the range of interests one shares in the field of law:
Corporate & Commercial Law with emphasis on legal practices dealing with business-related matters, corporate governance, and commercial transactions.
International & Comparative Law which entails study of the international legal frameworks and comparative legal systems.
Criminal & Security Law focusing primarily on the criminal justice system, criminology, and national security laws.
Law & Technology is essentially centered on exploring issues related to technology and how it interacts with legal frameworks as well as what kinds of legal problems such new phenomena develop.
Intellectual Property Law concentrates on issues revolving around the protection of and other legal concerns regarding intellectual property rights.
For instance, NLSIU Bangalore has a one-year LL.M. program, with specializations in Public Law, Criminal Law, Commercial Laws, and Law and Technology.
7. Three-Year LL.B. Program
Some NLUs have broken the conventional route and introduced a three-year law (LLB) program for persons who possess degrees in other disciplines wishing to pursue a career in law. NLSIU Bangalore, for instance, was the first NLU in 2022 to start its three-year LL.B. program.
8. Postgraduate Diplomas
The National Law Universities avail of various postgraduate diplomas for professionals who need the know-how but do not want to be in full-time study:
Biotechnology, Law, and Policy that addresses the legal and policy issues in biotechnology.
Medical Law, Policy, and Ethics which is reviewed with reference to the interplay of health, law, and ethical considerations.
Media Law, Entertainment, and Ethics that deals with the legal framework applicable to media and entertainment industries.
Banking Law which encapsulates regulations and the legal frameworks governing the banking sector.
Education Laws & Management that delves into the legal issues in education and institutional management.
Prison Administration that addresses legal and administrative aspects of the administration of prisons.
An example would be NLU Delhi's postgraduate diplomas in Urban Environmental Management and Law, Tourism and Environmental Laws, and in large areas.
9. Master of Science (M.S.) in Public Policy Analytics
An innovative program combining public policy studies with data analytics, thus producing a graduate who can engineer data-driven policy decisions. Although some offering or another varies, NLUs are, however, beginning to integrate analytics within their public policy courses to serve contemporary needs of governance.
10. Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Insurance and Risk Management
This MBA program integrates business administration with an education in insurance and risk management, preparing students to serve as leaders in financial institutions. An MBA offered by NLU Jodhpur is on insurance, which speaks to the rising requirements for expertise in this field.
